Police make arrests in Gilbert LDS church parking lot shooting

Gilbert police arrested three people in connection with an armed robbery that took place in a church parking lot and left one person shot.

Police said a 17-year-old and two 19-year-old men — Brandon Sotelo and Christopher Depper — were arrested Wednesday night after investigators determined they were involved in the shooting Tuesday at an LDS church parking lot near Guadalupe and Power roads.

Detectives believe the shooting victim met up with the trio to complete a drug transaction but that the group instead used a rifle to rob him.

According to court records, the three men met with the 18-year-old victim on the pretext of buying the narcotic drug DMT from him but actually intended to steal it.

Police said the 17-year-old was the shooter. Court records state he fired three rounds of a .22-caliber rifle, striking the victim once in the stomach. In most cases, The Arizona Republic does not identify juvenile defendants unless they are charged as an adult.

The victim, who was in stable condition after losing part of his colon, was expected to survive, police said.

Asked how he felt about the victim, Sotelo told investigators the victim "should die for snitching," court records state.

Court records indicate that all three suspects admitted to being involved in the robbery scheme and that the 17-year-old admitted to shooting the victim.

Police said each faces one count of felony armed robbery.
