The "War on Drugs" is a failure???

Here is a very interesting comment from a lawyer who made this post on an atheist list server I am on.

In fact I consider the guy who made this post to be a supporter of the police state and big government. But despite that he clearly understands the system doesn't work.

Keith, I've been in the law business for 35 years, and the system is completely broken. If you get justice at the courthouse, it's a fluke. In fact, I'm so disenamored of it that at age 56 I'm finally getting out of it.

The problem is that the justice system doesn't lend itself to being fixed in the way that you as an engineer normally think. Engineers assume that people are honestly looking for solutions, so the only issue is to find the best solutions. In law, unfortunately, there are a zillion special interests that think their special interest is more important than fixing the problem.

For example, nobody in their right mind thinks the war on drugs is working. They may think it's better than the alternative, but nobody actually thinks it's doing any good. But do you have any idea how many people would be out of work if the war on drugs ended? Or how many state and local law enforcement agencies would see massive budget cuts? And that's why it won't, at least no time soon. Keeping a failed policy in place is also keeping thousands of prison guards, prosecutors, and law enforcement officers employed, and they all vote.

And don't even get me started on banks and insurance companies.

I wish I could give you some really great ideas for how to fix the system. Actually, I've got lots of really good ideas for how to fix the system, and every single one of them is a political non-starter.
