At least we're not waking up to a 'cup of Josephus'

I really hate *ssholes like this Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels who use the government to shove their religious and moral values on the rest of us at the point of a government gun.

Disturbed by what he saw as rampant immorality among our seagoing forces, Daniels hired more chaplains, cut down on prostitution on or near naval bases and to top it all off, banned alcohol consumption.

He reminds me a lot of Harry Anslinger, who was pretty much responsible for America's insane "War on Marijuana".

Ask Clay: At least we're not waking up to a 'cup of Josephus'

Today’s question:

Why do we call a cup of coffee a “cup of joe?”

Did you know there are at least 26 slang words or street names for methamphetamine? That seems like a lot, but there you have it.

I came across that while looking into this matter of a cup of joe.

My first guess was that “joe” was some sort of play on “Java,” where they grow a lot of coffee. I don’t know what made me think that because it is completely wrong.

There are some among us who think “joe’’ comes from the days when Joltin’ Joe Dimaggio was selling coffee makers.

That is even more spectacularly wrong than my Java idea.

“Joe” as slang for coffee could date back to the days of World War I, when a North Carolina newspaper publisher named Josephus Daniels was appointed Secretary of the Navy by President Woodrow Wilson.

Daniels was a man of great piety and, like many such people, he was determined that nobody else should have much fun.

Disturbed by what he saw as rampant immorality among our seagoing forces, Daniels hired more chaplains, cut down on prostitution on or near naval bases and to top it all off, banned alcohol consumption.

In a biography of Daniels, author Lee Craig wrote:

“As a substitute, stewards increased their purchases of coffee, among other beverages, and Daniels’s name became linked to the daily drink of millions... A cup of coffee became disparagingly known as ‘a cup of Joseph Daniels,’ and as legend has it, this was soon shortened to a ‘cup of Joe.'”
