Most people don't know it, but write in votes almost never count in Arizona elections. Many other states have the same silly rules to prevent write in votes from causing a Democrat or Republican to lose to a write in candidate.
In Arizona for a write in vote to count in an election, the person whose name is written on to the ballot as a write in vote, must have filed as a write in candidate for that election. I don't know if the system is rigged, but the rules the system operates under are sure rigged so nobody but the Republicans and Democrats win elections.
Will John McCain's write-in vote for president count? Mary Jo Pitzl , The Republic | azcentral.com 12:09 p.m. MST October 11, 2016 In his debate with Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick on Monday night, Sen. John McCain said he might write in the name of his long-time friend, Lindsey Graham for president, now that he has withdrawn his support for Donald Trump. But if he does, his vote won't be counted. State law allows write-in candidates, but they must have filed proper paperwork 40 days ahead of the election — in this case, Sept. 29. Sixteen people (plus their running mates) met that deadline: Nine claimed no party, one ticket is Democratic, another is independent Evan McMullin, a former CIA agent and policy director for the U.S. House Republican Conference. The full list is on the Arizona Secretary of State's website. Their names will be posted at polling sites, and included with early-ballot information and voters are free to write in their names in the designated spot on their presidential ballot. But if McCain writes in Graham, or if the perennial protest-vote candidate Mickey Mouse's name appears on the write-in line, the vote will be lost to posterity. It wasn't clear if McCain was serious about Graham, but it would be in line with his intent to vote for "some good, conservative Republican who is qualified to be president." However, none of the official Arizona write-in candidates is declaring themselves as Republican, leaving no good write-in options for dedicated, but disenfranchised, Republicans.
