Cheba Hut now dispensing pot-themed sandwiches in downtown Phoenix

The only thing I don't like about the Cheba Hut is that it makes me think of Kathy Inman.

But other then those negative thoughts it's a good place.

Cheba Hut now dispensing pot-themed sandwiches in downtown Phoenix

Arizona’s homegrown sandwich shop opened in early September in the former Bayless Grocery & Market building, on Seventh and Garfield streets in Phoenix, next to Mother Bunch Brewing.

A grand opening party is scheduled during First Friday on Oct. 7.

Cheba Hut celebrates stoner culture. Its restaurants are decorated with paintings of beaches and images of Snoop Dogg, Bob Marley, Willie Nelson and other notable… smokers.

Its "toasted" sandwiches come in sizes that correlate with small, medium and large amounts of weed (nugs are 4 inches, pinners are 8 inches and blunts are 12 inches). Sandwiches are named after slang strains of cannabis, such as:

While the new downtown shop has all the hallmarks of the Hut, it has a few notable differences.

The atmosphere is more “dialed-in and professional-looking,” said Marc Torres, chief operating officer of Cheba Hut Franchising Inc.

The restaurant worked with Porter Barn Wood in Phoenix to use reclaimed wood for its dining tables and counter tops. The 10-foot-long community table is made from wood from a single tree. Its purse hooks are objects, such as original Nintendo controllers and gremlins.

“We’re trying to keep the soul alive as we grow and compete without becoming robots,” founder Scott Jennings said. “If it was just a funny play on marijuana words we would have been dead long ago.”

Familiy ties

Jennings, an Arizona State University alumnus, opened the first Cheba Hut in 1998 in Tempe. The building that housed the original restaurant was owned by the Bayless family, who opened the structure where the new Phoenix store is in 1926. Dorian Lenz, franchise owner for the Arizona Cheba Hut locations, also has ties to the Bayless family. His “real job” was mopping floors for A.J. Bayless in Tempe.

“It’s kind of full circle,” Lenz said.

The downtown Hut is the sixth in Arizona. There are also locations in Colorado, where Cheba Hut is now based, as well as California, Oregon, New Mexico and Wisconsin.
